As part of the updates to the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system, a new component \u2014 the G34 EVAP Leak Detection Pump Assembly (Fig. 10) \u2014 replaces the vent solenoid found in traditional EVAP systems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21079\" src=\"https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F10-EVAP-5-A.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F10-EVAP-5-A.png 740w, https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F10-EVAP-5-A-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F10-EVAP-5-A-85x55.png 85w, https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F10-EVAP-5-A-200x130.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Fig. 10<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before performing EVAP system leak diagnostics based on DTC P0442 (Evaporative Emission System Small Leak Detected) or P0455 (Evaporative Emission System Large Leak Detected), the G34 EVAP Leak Detection Pump must be disconnected to prevent damage. Typical EVAP system testing is performed from the front of the vehicle to the back. For the 1.2L engine, the leak check pump is at the end of the line at the rear of the vehicle. (Fig. 11, #7) If not disconnected, smoke oil could collect in the pump, leading to pump failure. Refer to Document ID 6496657 in the appropriate Service Information for complete information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G34 Leak Detection Pump Operation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The G34 EVAP Leak Detection Pump is used to detect leaks in the EVAP system. Unlike traditional EVAP systems, the system for the 1.2L E85 engine does not use a vent solenoid to seal the system, which significantly changes the procedure for performing leak tests.<\/p>\n<p>The G34 EVAP Leak Detection Pump Assembly consists of four main components. (Fig. 12)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>EVAP vacuum leak pump switching valve (#1)<\/li>\n<li>Reference orifice (0.020 in.; 0.51mm)<\/li>\n<li>EVAP vacuum leak pump pressure sensor<\/li>\n<li>Leak detection pump (driven by a 12V DC motor)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These components are integral parts of the EVAP leak detection pump assembly and are not serviceable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21077\" src=\"https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F12-EVAP-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F12-EVAP-3.png 672w, https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F12-EVAP-3-300x290.png 300w, https:\/\/gm-techlink.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F12-EVAP-3-57x55.png 57w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Fig. 12<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leak Detection Process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is the updated procedure the ECM will perform to run DTC P0422 and P0455 diagnostics and detect leaks on the new 1.2L engine.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The vehicle must be driven at least 0.1 miles and then turned off for 5 \u2013 5 hours in ambient temperatures above 40\u00b0F (4.5\u00b0C).<\/li>\n<li>The system will begin its automated leak test between 5 \u2013 5 hours when the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) stabilizes with ambient temperature.<\/li>\n<li>The switching valve (#1) actuates, and the pump (#4) pulls a vacuum over the reference orifice (#2) to establish a baseline measurement.<\/li>\n<li>The valve then switches, allowing the pump to pull a vacuum on the entire EVAP system.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The test runs for up to 800 seconds, comparing pressure values to determine if a leak exists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Performing a Smoke Test<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To perform a smoke test on the new EVAP system:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Follow SI instructions to access the G34 pump at the right rear wheel well.<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect the vapor line connecting the EVAP canister to the G34 pump.<\/li>\n<li>Install the J-41413\u2013303 EVAP tool at the canister hose and then install the GE-41413-A \/ B \/ C EVAP tester.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce smoke at this location \u2013 NOT through the G34 pump.
