(Fig. 10) Key stakeholders from Brand Quality, Engineering, suppliers, production plants, assembly plants and Quality Management use information gathered from parts analysis — including components that may not appear to be directly related to the condition — to help identify the possible causes of improper operation. If all parts and components that are charged to the repair order are not returned, it can prevent GM from identifying the root cause of the issue and developing an effective solution.

Fig. 10

TIP: All parts from the paid warranty claim must be returned. Missing or incorrect parts from the repair can result in the entire warranty claim being debited.

Why Are All Parts Needed?

Several recent returns to the WPC have not included all parts of the repair. These incomplete returns provide good examples of how missing parts can hinder the investigation into the root cause of an issue. By not returning all related parts charged to the repair order (except fluids), analysis will be incomplete. Related parts include items such as exhaust seals, filter kits and transfer case gaskets.

Here are several examples of transmission replacements recently received at the WPC where the parts returned were incomplete or incorrect.

A vehicle recently had the transmission, including the valve body and the wiring harness, replaced as part of a repair. However, only the transmission was returned for inspection. The original valve body and wiring harness may have contained evidence as to why the transmission failed.

Another transmission replacement did not include many of the components charged to the repair, including the clutch pistons/seals and clutch plates. These are considered critical components that must be returned in order to determine the root cause of the transmission issue.

A valve body was replaced on a vehicle, but the shift control was returned to the WPC instead of the valve body. Returning the incorrect parts also can result in a debit of the entire warranty claim.

Part Return Requests

Once the WPC has issued a part return request, there are two methods to view the information from Global Warranty Management (GWM).

Summary Details Through the GWM Notification Box – The green numbers on the main page indicate the new Parts Return or Document Return Requests. Click the transaction number link for the transaction details for the part or document being requested. Under the “Net Item Labor Parts” tab are the parts paid on the transaction. Return all parts listed except any fluids or chemicals.

Open Part Return Requests – Access Open Part Return Requests through the “Prepare Parts Return” tab of GWM. From the drop-down menu, select the “Review Service Agent Open Parts Return Requests” link.

Proper Packaging

The WPC receives a number of damaged transmission parts, including chipped, gouged and dented solenoid body and valve body cores. The damage is often caused by inadequate packaging for shipping the components.

If an assembly is requested by the WPC, include all parts with the return. Reattach loose parts, when possible, and securely place small parts in a bag or box with the engine or transmission in the container. All fluids must be drained prior to shipping. Engine and transmission assemblies must be reassembled sufficiently to allow safe handling.

Ensure the engine or transmission is securely fastened to the shipping crate or container. (Fig. 11) Use a retaining bracket to secure the torque converter. The bracket should be placed over the torque converter center hub.

Fig. 11

Refer to Bulletin #25-NA-363 for more information on shipping parts to the WPC.
