GM has recently announced that the serial numbers of removed and installed components must be recorded when certain labor operations are used. Tracking serial numbers helps link returned components to the associated vehicle and supports product quality reviews and warranty analysis.
Global Warranty Management (GWM) will identify when recording serial numbers is required during replacement of the following components:
- Engine
- Transmission
- Torque converter
- Valve body
- High-voltage battery pack (RESS)
- Primary drive unit
- Secondary drive unit
- Airbag steering wheel module
- Steering wheel airbag
- Airbag instrument panel module
Serial Number Tracking
During the repair, technicians should locate the serial number on the defective component being removed from the vehicle and record it on the job card (repair order). The serial number location will vary by component. (Fig. 6)

If the technician fails to document the serial number of the part during removal, the number should be obtained from the part while being held in the dealership for GM’s required parts retention period.
The serial number of each new component being installed on the vehicle should be recorded as well. It’s critical that the serial number be recorded before installation.
During claim submission using certain labor operations, the warranty administrator must enter the removed component serial number in the Removed Serial Number field in GWM. The serial number of newly installed components also must be entered in the Serial Number field in the Parts section for select part numbers.
