Valve Lifter Replacement Tips

When replacing a collapsed lifter and/or a lifter that has come apart due to an internal lifter issue on 2020-2021 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500; 2021 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade models equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine (RPO L84) or 6.2L V8 engine (RPO L87), the lifter and guide must be returned to the Warranty Parts Center for inspection and analysis. Refer to #PIP5776F for VIN breakpoints. Affected engines may have a misfire condition with a bent pushrod. Misfire DTCs P0300–P0308 may be set.

TIP: Before shipping the parts, indicate which lifter has failed by marking its location on the guide. Do not cover the date code.

When replacing the lifters, it is recommended to replace the valve lifter guide and the four lifters. (Fig. 6) It is not necessary to replace the oil control solenoid valve. Follow the replacement guidelines below for engines without any previous valve-related failures:

  • If the vehicle has under 8,000 miles (12,875 km) and is within the breakpoint window, replace all lifters and guides on both banks.
  • If vehicle has over 8,000 miles (12,875 km) and is within the breakpoint window, replace the lifters and guides on the affected bank only, not both.

Note the installed position of the valve lifter guide. The notched area of the lifter guide aligns with the locating tab on the engine block. (Fig. 7) Install the new valve lifter guide and the lifters as an assembly.
