Exhaust Valve Electrical Connector Reconfiguration

For the 2023 model year, there are two possible exhaust muffler designs available on Escalade models. (Fig. 6) The muffler design was changed later in the model year with a different exhaust valve orientation than some earlier 2023 models.

If a replacement exhaust muffler is being installed, the electrical connector must be extended using a new connector pigtail in order to properly attach to the exhaust valve. Before making any repairs, inspect the exhaust valve configuration and determine if the valve is the earlier design (Fig. 7, #1) or the later design with the new exhaust valve orientation. (Fig. 7, #2)

To install the new wiring harness pigtail, first remove the 5th terminal from the new electrical connector and cut the new pigtail to the proper length, depending on the side of the vehicle where the muffler is being installed. The pigtail should be 3 inches (76 mm) for the driver-side exhaust valve (Fig. 8, #1) and 4 inches (102 mm) for the passenger-side exhaust valve. (Fig. 8, #2)

When splicing in the new pigtail, it is recommended to install one wire at a time. (Fig. 9) Do not cut all the wires at the same time. Refer to Inline Harness Connector End Views in the appropriate Service information for additional information when splicing the pigtail to the body wiring harness.

Also remove the plug in the 5th socket from the old electrical connector and install it in the new connector. (Fig. 10)

Once the new pigtail is spliced in, use woven Polyester Electrical Tape (PET) to wrap the wiring harness in a double layer, extending along the harness past the splice, to the electrical connector. Next, wrap the wiring harness using a heat-resistant tape so it is protected from heat being emitted from the exhaust. (Fig. 11)
