Windshield Wiper Arms Interference

2024-2025 Equinox EV and 2025 OPTIQ models feature large, overlapping windshield wipers that provide a clear view of the road ahead for drivers. If the wiper arms are not aligned correctly, the driver and passenger wiper blades may contact each other or not wipe the windshield completely.

There have been cases on some Equinox EV and OPTIQ models where the wiper arms are not aligned correctly to the wiper motor pivot shaft, resulting in wiper blade contact (Fig. 5) or poor wiper coverage of the windshield near the A-pillar.

If these conditions are present, check for proper wiper arm alignment. Correctly aligned wipers will have a gap between the blades in the Park position. (Fig. 6)

If the wipers are contacting each other or not properly aligned, follow the Windshield Wiper Arm Adjustment procedure in the appropriate Service Information.

For wipers that are not fully clearing the windshield, check for proper operation while cycling the wipers. The reversal point of the blade should be approximately 40-50 mm (1.6-2.0 inches) to the edge of the blackout edge on the windshield glass. (Fig. 7)

Consistency in measuring this gap can vary depending on where the measurement is taken, the cycle speed of the wipers and other conditions. It is not recommended to use measurements at the A-pillar to accurately assess alignment. However, the measurement can be used as a reference if wiper coverage appears incorrect.

Before beginning diagnosis, place the vehicle in Service mode and turn the wiper system off. The wipers should be in the Park position. The wipers arms should not rotate freely.

Check that the wiper arm is aligned to the glass wiper alignment marks. If not aligned, it will be necessary to remove the wiper arm using the J-39822 Wiper Arm Puller, clean the wiper pivot shaft splines, and realign the wiper arm (Fig. 8, #1) with the markings on the windshield. (Fig. 8, #2)

TIP: The alignment of the wipers should only be performed when the wipers are in the Park position. Be sure to follow all adjustment procedures in the appropriate Service Information.
